After the rest of our upstairs rooms and bathrooms got makeovers, the only room left to do was the master bedroom. This is part 1 of the master bedroom makeover.

People say Rome wasn’t built in a day, but I’ve seen other bloggers put a spin on it and say “home wasn’t built in a day.” And they are absolutely right!

One of my keys to staying sane and keeping my budget in check is updating one room at time. I also will add that I strongly believe in living in the space then add things slowly. Now that I have the “guts” of the room completed, I feel confident to add things in the future, if I decide to do so. But for now, here is my vintage modern master bedroom makeover!

What our room looked like before

Before our builder grade bedroom was boring. It did not have much personality to it. My story, as always, is the same – we moved in, I quickly “whipped” together a look, but of course it fell flat. There was no real design to it. The things I loved about the room were the Spiced Rum curtains, the nightstands, the lamps and the vintage dressers. I also loved the bed which was new. Everything else was old and reused from our old bedroom in our old house.

I called out all the things I planned to change in the room like the mirrors that were too high and the ripped accent pillows.

Poor plant. This fiddle leaf definitely seen better days.

Here is what the room looks like after with all the changes! New bedding, fresh flowers, new mirrors and a piece of artwork picked up from Home Goods!

Swapping Out the Mirrors

I swapped out the round mirrors for long mirrors over the nightstand. This was inspired by high-end style, but ended up being really cheap! I got these mirrors from the Mainstays collection for only $7. They were already coated in gold, so this worked perfectly for what I was trying to do. A big change was adding diy wall trim to the wall using something called flexible wall trim. (Watch how I used and cut it here in my Master Bedroom Makeover 2021 video) This stuff is SUPER easy to use. Perfect for renters who want high end style, but can’t alter their living space with real wood trim.

Bedding

No one talks about how hard it is to find the right bedding for your room. Everyone makes it seem so simple, but its not. I’m more of a vintage modern style with a hint of minimalism so thats why I lean toward plain and simple bedding. To find simple bedding for a decent price was hard! I did find a few at West Elm and Pottery Barn, but the prices were around $300 just for the comforter, nothing else was included! I landed on a white quilt, black duvet, the softest faux fur euro pillows ever and a vintage glam beaded pillow from Home Goods. The black duvet cover, the area rug and new window treatments transformed the way the space looks.

Choosing a Rug for the Bedroom

Picking a rug is hard. What I ended up doing was making a decision based on the price and feeling of the rug. I wanted something soft to the touch. Because I had success with a different shag-style rug in the past, I thought this high-piled rug in the bedroom would work. This rug was really affordable from Home Depot, so if I do decide to swap it out in the future, I won’t feel so bad.

Vintage Vanity and Vintage Dresser

The vanity is now moved to the center of the wall and added shelves creates a nice, warm balance to the room.

The dresser is one of my favorite areas in the room. I love the size and style of the dresser. I styled it by reframing a custom piece of art, updated the flowers and vase and reused the mirror tray to house candles, sage and a mercury glass decorative piece.

What I really love about the vanity is the vintage mirror that I found on Facebook Marketplace. I also found the dresser and vanity on Craigslist years ago. The wood is HEAVY.

Paint Colors

One thing I love talking about is paint. I love talking about which paint color to use, which finish to use, what color again! 😂 Painting is one of those home DIY projects that always seem to be harder, but once you get started it is so relaxing and therapeutic. I put music on and sing along as I roll the paint on!

I wanted a light and airy bedroom (although I was on the fence about painting the wall with the headboard black). The color of this bedroom is called Polar Bear by Behr at Home Depot. I would love to take credit for finding this color, but I can’t. I actually stumbled upon a Monica Hibbs photo and went down the rabbit hole of her entire house. I literally fell in love with every room in her house. She inspired me, well her posts did, I don’t know her personally. 😂 Those posts sealed the deal for me, I gave the paint a try and I have not looked back since.

White Curtains with Black Trim

These white curtains with a thick black trim adds a super elegant touch in my opinion! Don’t get me wrong, I love my spiced rum curtains, but these allow more light to come into the room and I LOVE a bright and airy room. The crisp cotton texture of the curtains are perfect for spring.

Desk and Vanity in the Bedroom

I searched high and low for example of “a desk and vanity in the bedroom” on Pinterest. And nothing showed up. Am I the only who thinks about this? Well, I’ll be honest, some images did show up, but that was only for extra large bedrooms, mansion sized rooms! There was no examples of a room my size with something like this in it.

Just because I didn’t see any examples, didn’t mean it couldn’t work. I ended up trying it out for myself. If you’ve watched my Master Bedroom Makeover YouTube video, you’ll see that I tried to squeeze a ladder desk in my master bedroom. This room is a decent medium-sized room, but for my layout, it just didn’t work. I think its because my furniture pieces are a little on the larger side. They’re vintage and I got them from an estate sale. No one asked, but I wanted to tell you anyway.

What to do instead of having a desk and vanity in the bedroom?

Instead, I installed shelves in the corner of the room and used that to store a fiddle leaf plant, a motivational quote, Rae Dunn pencil/marker/pens set and of course adding in writing utensils.

For now, I still use my laptop at my vanity, at the dining room table or in bed.

One Room – Two Looks

This modern vintage master bedroom was styled with new curtains – which I LOVE, a black duvet cover and a glamorous accent pillow was Look 1. I created two looks for this bedroom that I can interchange between seasons.
